HOUSTON – As the Houston Texans finalize their 53-man roster, head coach DeMeco Ryans finds himself in one of the most difficult phases of the NFL season—saying goodbye to over 30 players who gave their all during training camp and preseason. The process, which Ryans described as “difficult,” is an inevitable part of building a competitive team, but that doesn’t make it any easier for the players or the coaching staff.

The Harsh Reality of NFL Roster Cuts

Every year, teams must make tough decisions, trimming their roster from 90 players to just 53 before the regular season begins. This means more than a third of the team is forced to pack up and move on, either finding another opportunity elsewhere or facing the reality that their NFL dreams may be put on hold.

For Ryans, a former NFL linebacker who understands the grind of making a team, these cuts go beyond just numbers. “It’s never easy,” he said in a press conference. “These guys have worked their tails off, they’ve given everything to this team, and to have to tell them that their journey here is ending—it’s tough.”

The Texans have had several intense position battles throughout training camp, making the decisions even harder. Young players hoping to make a name for themselves and veterans looking to secure a spot all fought for limited opportunities.

Emotional Conversations and Difficult Decisions

For many players, the cut process begins with a dreaded phone call, informing them to meet with the coaching staff and general manager. It’s a brief but impactful conversation—sometimes offering hope for a practice squad spot, other times serving as a hard goodbye.

“You see the emotion in their eyes, and you feel it because you know how much work they put in,” Ryans said. “These are men who have sacrificed so much, trying to achieve their dreams. As a coach, you respect that, and you wish you could keep everyone.”

While some players will be re-signed to the practice squad, others will be looking for opportunities with different teams. A handful may never play in the NFL again, making this moment one of the toughest of their careers.

Surprising Cuts and Tough Calls

Every year, there are surprising names on the list of cuts, and this season was no exception. A few young prospects who had strong preseason performances didn’t make the final roster, proving once again how difficult these decisions can be.

“We had a lot of guys that deserved a spot,” Ryans admitted. “The competition was high, and it came down to what was best for the team overall. You never want to let go of good players, but it’s part of the business.”

Looking Ahead to the Season

With the roster now set, the Texans will shift their focus toward the regular season, with Ryans and his coaching staff ready to move forward with the players who made the cut. However, that doesn’t mean he forgets about those who didn’t.

“I tell them all the same thing: Keep working, stay ready,” Ryans said. “Just because today isn’t your day doesn’t mean your time won’t come.”

For now, the Texans’ journey continues with their final roster, but the emotional toll of saying goodbye lingers. In the NFL, talent is only part of the equation—timing, opportunity, and tough decisions shape the careers of hundreds of players every year.
