In a significant organizational shift, the Seattle Seahawks have parted ways with offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after just one season. Head coach Mike Macdonald announced the decision on January 6, 2025, citing a divergence in offensive philosophies as the primary reason for the change.

Performance Under Grubb

Grubb, 48, was appointed as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator on February 13, 2024, transitioning from a successful tenure at the University of Washington. Despite high expectations, the Seahawks’ offense under his leadership faced challenges throughout the 2024 NFL season. The team ranked 14th in total yards and 18th in points scored, with a particularly underwhelming rushing attack that placed 28th in the league. Quarterback Geno Smith achieved a 70.4% completion rate and threw for 4,320 yards but also recorded 15 interceptions, marking his highest since becoming Seattle’s starter in 2022.

Macdonald’s Perspective

Addressing the media, Coach Macdonald elaborated on the rationale behind the decision:

“It’s really as simple as, I felt like the direction our offense was going was different than the vision I had for our team, and I felt like it was a necessary decision at this point,” Macdonald said.

Macdonald acknowledged Grubb’s coaching acumen and the positive aspects of the offense during the season but emphasized the need for alignment in strategic direction.

Grubb’s Background

Before his stint with the Seahawks, Grubb built a reputable career in collegiate football. He began coaching at Kingsley–Pierson High School in 2003 and later held positions at South Dakota State, Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, and the University of Washington. His offensive schemes at Washington were particularly noteworthy, leading the nation in several categories, including passing yards per game and total offense.

Season Overview

The Seahawks concluded the 2024 season with a record of 9 wins and 8 losses. Notable games included a 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on December 15, 2024, where the offense struggled to find rhythm, and a 27-24 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings on December 22, 2024, which further highlighted inconsistencies in offensive execution.

Future Outlook

With Grubb’s departure, the Seahawks are expected to initiate a search for a new offensive coordinator who aligns with Coach Macdonald’s vision for a more balanced and effective offensive strategy. This change aims to enhance the team’s performance and competitiveness in the upcoming season.

The decision to part ways with Grubb underscores the Seahawks’ commitment to refining their approach and achieving greater success in the NFL. As the off season progresses, the organization will focus on identifying and integrating new leadership to steer the offense toward improved outcomes.
