Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant move to bolster their pitching staff, acquiring left-hander Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins in exchange for two prospects.

The Phillies sent minor league pitchers Bailey Falter and Cristian Hernandez to the Marlins in exchange for Luzardo, who has been one of the most promising young pitchers in the game.

“We’re thrilled to add Jesús to our rotation,” said Phillies General Manager Sam Fuld. “He’s a talented young pitcher with a high ceiling, and we believe he’ll be a key contributor to our team’s success.”

Luzardo, 26, has been with the Marlins since 2022, when he was acquired from the Oakland Athletics. In his time with Miami, he has shown flashes of brilliance, posting a 3.81 ERA and striking out 9.5 batters per nine innings.

However, Luzardo’s 2024 season was cut short due to a stress reaction in his lower back, which limited him to just 15 starts. Despite the injury, the Phillies are confident that Luzardo will be fully healthy and ready to contribute to their rotation in 2025.

“We’ve done our due diligence on Jesús’ injury, and we’re confident that he’ll be ready to go for the start of the season,” said Fuld. “We’re excited to see what he can do in a Phillies uniform.”

The trade marks a significant move for the Phillies, who have been looking to bolster their pitching staff after a disappointing 2024 season. With Luzardo on board, the Phillies now have a deep and talented rotation that includes Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, and Ranger Suárez.

The Marlins, meanwhile, receive two promising young prospects in Falter and Hernandez. Falter, 25, has already made his major league debut with the Phillies, posting a 4.21 ERA in 15 appearances. Hernandez, 20, is a highly-regarded pitching prospect who has already shown impressive stuff in the minor leagues.

“We’re excited to add Bailey and Cristian to our organization,” said Marlins General Manager Kim Ng. “Both players have a lot of potential, and we believe they’ll be key contributors to our team’s success in the future.”

The trade is a significant move for both teams, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out in the 2025 season.
