Breaking:Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly Addresses  Allegations On…

on

Collingwood Football Club CEO Craig Kelly has publicly addressed allegations of racism leveled against him, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of outgoing club president Jeff Browne. The allegations, which stem from comments reportedly made by Kelly earlier this year, have sparked significant debate, challenging the club’s reputation amid ongoing efforts to foster inclusivity.

The allegations came to light in July when Mark Cleaver, Collingwood’s former Head of First Nations Strategy, accused Kelly of making derogatory remarks about Indigenous people. Cleaver’s claims included allegations that Kelly joked about placing a “live possum” in an Indigenous player’s room and made dismissive comments about an Aboriginal elder. Cleaver, whose role was pivotal to Collingwood’s outreach and reconciliation initiatives, also filed a wrongful dismissal claim following his departure from the club.

In response, Kelly denied any wrongdoing and emphasized that the accusations were unsubstantiated. Investigations conducted by the club and an independent party reportedly cleared him of breaching workplace laws. Speaking out for the first time since the allegations surfaced, Kelly reiterated his commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion at Collingwood.

“I am deeply grateful to Jeff Browne for his support and leadership during this challenging time,” Kelly said. “These allegations have been difficult for me personally, but they have only strengthened my resolve to ensure Collingwood remains a place where everyone feels valued and respected.”

Outgoing president Jeff Browne, who has been a vocal supporter of Kelly throughout the ordeal, stood by the CEO’s record and denied that the club had systemic issues with racism. Browne highlighted Collingwood’s progress since the release of the 2021 “Do Better” report, which identified systemic racism within the organization.

“We have worked tirelessly to make Collingwood a safer and more inclusive club for everyone,” Browne said in a statement. “Craig Kelly has been instrumental in that progress, and I have full confidence in his commitment to our values.”

The controversy has had significant ramifications, including the termination of Collingwood’s partnership with the Indigenous family violence organization Dardi Munwurro. Despite this, the club has reaffirmed its commitment to reconciliation efforts, pledging to rebuild trust with the community and its Indigenous stakeholders.

Last month, Collingwood and Cleaver reached an out-of-court settlement regarding the wrongful dismissal claim. Both parties have agreed to confidentiality terms, refraining from further public commentary on the matter.

Kelly’s statement comes at a critical time for the club, with Browne set to step down as president. The incoming leadership will face the challenge of navigating the aftermath of these allegations while continuing to uphold the club’s values of inclusion and equality.

As Collingwood looks to move forward, Kelly expressed optimism about the future. “This has been a learning experience for all of us, and I remain committed to ensuring that Collingwood continues to lead the way in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all,” he said.

The incident underscores the importance of continued accountability as the AFL and its clubs strive to address historical and systemic issues within the sport.
